Susan Croll Education Fund — Overview

The Susan Croll Education Fund is a charitable fund established through the Lookout Foundation to support education and skill-building opportunities for vulnerable and marginalized individuals served by Lookout across British Columbia.

It was created in honour of Susan Croll, an educator, social activist, and Lookout board member who believed strongly that access to education should be universal and not limited by financial barriers.

Purpose and Goals

The fund is designed to:

  • Provide low-barrier access to education and training
  • Help individuals facing poverty, homelessness, or other challenges build skills for independence
  • Support pathways toward meaningful employment and improved well-being

At its core, the fund reflects the belief that education is a key driver of stability and opportunity, especially for people experiencing systemic barriers.

What the Fund Supports

Programs funded typically focus on practical, life-enhancing skills such as:

  • Basic education (literacy, numeracy, computer skills)
  • Life skills (budgeting, maintaining housing, daily organization)
  • Social skills (communication, conflict resolution, relationship-building)
  • Health literacy (wellness, fitness)
  • Pre-employment training (e.g., certifications like First Aid or FoodSafe)

These are often delivered in trauma-informed, supportive environments tailored to people with complex life circumstances.

Impact and Legacy

The fund:

  • Continues Susan Croll’s vision of education as empowerment
  • Helps individuals regain confidence, purpose, and direction
  • Contributes to breaking cycles of poverty and homelessness by increasing access to learning opportunities

It is part of Lookout’s broader mission to provide a social safety net of housing, health, and support services for vulnerable adults across the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island.
